An old gem from my blog. Classic sermon entitled “A Knock At Midnight”, given in June of 1967. My favorite oratorical piece from MLK. One of his best 3 oratorical works (along with “The Drum Major Instinct” and “I’ve Been To the Mountaintop”). Notice… ‘I Have a Dream’ is not part of that list. It’s not even close to being his best work…. i’m always annoyed when ‘I Have A Dream’ is played over & over…and MLK is sanitized and packaged as this safe civil rights product every year (while there is so much chaos across the globe, much of it instigated by the U.S.). Fact is, at the time of his assassination MLK had already switched focus from domestic civil rights to two other important issues - 1) Economic justice/inequality and 2). International Affairs/ Peace. I play back these speeches and reach for my Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye, John Coltrane & C. Mayfield albums when I start bottoming out, hating myself, and I get really tired of running the rat race. It’s like fuel for me when I start to think about how screwed up the world/life is.
